Obituary

Robert Anthony Gatta, Sr., passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, at the age of 80, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 16, 1944, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Robert's life was marked by hard work, quiet strength, and deep love for his family.

Robert spent over five decades driving taxis in the Boston area, particularly in Belmont, Massachusetts. His career spanned millions of miles across New England, and he worked tirelessly, often putting in 12 to 14-hour days well into his 78th year. Driving was not just a job for Robert; it was a passion he pursued with dedication throughout his life. He also enjoyed running a cleaning business on the side.

In addition to his work as a taxi driver, Robert drove ice cream trucks during the summers for his sister Sandy, bringing joy to countless children from the 1980s to the early 2000s.

An avid candlepin bowler, Robert spent nearly every Thursday at Lanes and Games, a tradition he maintained until about a decade ago. His lifelong commitment to the sport reflected his deep love for it. He was also a devoted Boston Red Sox fan.

Robert faced numerous health challenges with remarkable resilience, surviving cancer three times and enduring many complications along the way. Despite these struggles, his spirit remained strong.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Constantine ("Connie") and Joseph; his two wives: Sandra Gatta (MacKenzie), with whom he had four children—Kathleen, Robert Jr., Babette, and Johnny (deceased 1965); and later by his wife, Debra Ann Gatta, with whom he had Joey Gatta. Robert and Debra were married for nearly 38 years until her passing in December 2023, a loss that was deeply felt.

Robert is survived by many grandchildren who loved him dearly: Amanda, Anthony, Athena, Robert, Brianna, Devin, Victoria, Zoey, and Charlie, as well as a great-granddaughter, Gianna, who preceded him in death. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren: Alaynah, Donovan, Ryder, and Harmonie.

He is remembered by his living siblings, Mark, Mike, Eddie, and Sandy, and his deceased sister, Pauline, who passed away a few years ago.

Robert's family will forever remember his quiet, solemn presence—a man who was always there, even without saying a word. His love, though often unspoken, was deeply felt by all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, resilience, and quiet strength will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

He will be profoundly missed by all who loved him.
