Obituary

John "Fred" Frederick Wendt, died on June 4, 2022, at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, following a lengthy illness. He will be greatly missed.

A graduate of Catholic University, School of Architecture, he found his passion and profession in his woodworking studio.  Following a brief stint at the Smithsonian Institution's Exhibits Department, he launched his own woodworking business. His Custom Woodworking business had a wide range of clients including McDonnell Douglas Corporation and Boeing  as well as law firms and government offices in the metropolitan DC area.

John had an immense love and knowledge of music. He took dance classes in ballroom and country western two-step and was a sought-after partner.

"Big John" was beloved in the dance community for his gentle spirit, big heart and skill on the dance floor.

In the 1990's, John was inspired by the American Handcraft movement where he discovered and took up wood turning. He was a member of the Chesapeake Woodturners. He admired and aspired to the work and teachings of David Ellsworth, Richard Raffin, and Al Stirt.

The birth of his daughter, Taylor, was "the greatest moment" in his life. She was his pride and joy. He loved her with his whole heart.

He and his family moved to Rockport, Massachusetts in 2000. He quickly fell in love with the beauty of the ocean which inspired his creative soul.

He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Edith (Brahler) Wendt and later in life by his younger brother James Brahler Wendt and his former first wife, Stephanie King Wendt. He is survived by his daughter, Taylor Anne Wendt, and his former wife Joan Cleveland Wendt.

A private burial service will be held at Beech Grove Cemetery in Rockport, MA at a future date. Donations may be made in his memory to Massachusetts General Hospital/Cardiology .
