Obituary

It is with much sorrow and heartbreak that we announce the passing of Dale Malabarba, 68, of Brookline, MA (formerly of Ashland, MA and Everett, MA). Dale left us unexpectedly on Thursday, January 13, 2022, while living his best life in his second home in La Jolla, CA. A graduate of Everett High School, class of '71, he earned his BA from Boston University and his MA from Tufts University, both in economics, before taking a break from academia to begin his professional career. He spent his entire career in civil service, first with the Census Bureau and then as a civilian employed by the US army at Natick Labs, where he worked for 35 years until his retirement in 2016 as the director of Modeling and Analysis, earning a doctorate in business management from California Coast University along the way. Even after his retirement, he kept his hand in by working part time for Technology Solutions Experts, Inc, where he was still employed at the time of his death.

One of those blessed souls wholly incapable of sitting idle even in his leisure time, Dale also spent countless volunteer hours applying that same expertise for the benefit of many different non-profit and educational enterprises. Ever possessed of a love of learning and a love of community, Dale was never happier than when he could share the fruits of the first for the betterment of the second. When he did choose to take time for himself, Dale was a semi-professional traveler, published photographer, dedicated beach-goer, journeyman wine connoisseur, and avid reader.

Dale was the only son of the late Phillip and Shirley Malabarba (Moore), of Malden, MA (formerly of Everett). He is survived by his partner of 14 years Shelley Hurwitz, of Brookline, MA; daughters Beth Malabarba and Nancy Malabarba, both formerly of Ashland, MA; son-in-law Jason DeLoria, and his ex-wife Catherine Young, with whom he strove to maintain a life-long friendship.

Condolence visits with the family will be at the J.F. Ward Funeral Home, 772 Broadway, Everett, MA on Monday, January 24th, 2022 from 4 PM to 7 PM.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Rails to Trails Conservancy or Guiding eyes for the blind. A formal memorial service will be held at a later date.
